What does a speech pathologist do?

A speech pathologist assesses and diagnoses children who present with a variety of communication difficulties including:

  • Articulation/speech sounds: saying the sounds in words so that others can understand what is being said

  • Fluency: the smoothness with which sounds, syllables, words, and phrases are joined together during speech

  • Language:

    • Expressive: using words, sentences, gestures, and writing to convey a message

    • Receptive: understanding words and language

  • Literacy: reading, understanding what is read, and written communication

  • Social communication/pragmatics: the ways in which language is used in different social settings
